According to a new report from Navigant Research, ¡°The parking industry is going through its biggest evolution since the introduction of the first parking meters in Oklahoma City in 1935,¡± says Eric Woods, research director. ¡°It is being transformed by new technologies that are increasing operational efficiency and customer expectations, and by new perspectives on the role of parking within cities.¡±

Simple and Cost Effective Parking Guidance and Information

Drivers travelling within urban cores spend a significant amount of their time looking for suitable parking space.  The Study, by UCLA Urban Planning Professor and parking expert Donald Shoup, found that up to 45% of traffic in Brooklyn in New York is generated by motorists circling blocks looking for parking space. The same study estimated that in Westwood Village, a Los Angeles neighborhood, motorists drove 950,000 excess miles in search of parking, a distance equivalent to 38 trips around the earth. To cover this distance, 47,000 gallons of gasoline were used, and 730 tons of CO2 were emitted.  IBM surveyed 30 cities and found that drivers in 30 urban areas spent 19.5 minutes looking for parking once near their destination.

Parking guidance systems are becoming more popular as a means of directing parkers to the nearest available space, resulting in the elimination of excessive searching for a space, a reduction in vehicle emissions, and more efficient utilization of the parking supply. These systems can be implemented for a single multi-level parking structure or on an area-wide basis in an urban area. Connected consumers will likely become accustomed to paying more for parking in exchange for added convenience of automated guidance to available parking spots.

Lighting system of parking building usually lights on 24hours 7days and outside parking lots are also light on after the sunset without smart control. Parking industry is now beginning to use Occupation/Motion sensor to control energy consumption and to reduce carbon gas emission through the use of dimming control and timers, which is very effective, but is limited use for the lighting control only.

Vision sensor on lighting system has 3-4x longer sensing range and precise detection capacity than PIR or Microwave based Occupancy Sensor, which has widely been used in the market.
